Geoscientists in the Classroom
Our focus on science education for preservice and inservice teachers has
led us to direct education of precollege students. In the past, with assistance
from the Shell Foundation, we provided two programs for students in grades
4 and 5. One, given during the early summer, was a week-long course that
addresses the basics of geology and was commonly known as "Geology 101
for Kids." The second program, "Geoscientists in the Classroom" provided the opportunity
for faculty and students to discuss aspects of the geosciences in elementary
classrooms. We are currently seeking additional funds to continue these
formal outreach programs. Arrangements for classroom visits should now
be made with individual faculty, who may be contacted through Geological
Sciences' home page.
