Educational Activities

The Department of Geological Sciences has had a long history of providing courses for teachers and future teachers. Close ties with the College of Education and the Ohio Board of Regent's Eisenhower Program for teachers have helped us provide appropriate courses for and anticipate the needs of educators. Many of us have worked with faculty in Science Education and Natural Resources in developing Earth System Science and Global Change courses. The most popular course that I offer specifically for teachers is entitled Field Geology for Science Teachers (GS583). There are actually three offerings that differ in scope and location. I am involved in two:  GS583[Appalachia], is a five-day field experience in the physiographic provinces between Columbus, Ohio and Mt. Airy, North Carolina, GS583B [Bahamas], is a week-long experience on San Salvador Island, The Bahamas, based at the Gerace Research Center. In this course, that usually is run jointly with GS 602 ( Dr. Ausich), Carbonate Geology and Earth Systems Science are the primary foci. The third version of GS 583 is field work on and around Lake Erie; it is under the direction of Dr. Krissek. I also supervise Science Education students' independent studies about various topics in the geosciences and offer special workshops for teachers as the need and opportunities arise. Most recently this has been involvement with the Wonders of our World project  and our own NSF Science  Fellows Supporting Teachers in the Classroom (both under the direction of Dr. S. Olesik).  Many other departmental courses are of interest to teachers; several of the more popular ones in Geological Sciences include:
GS 110 History of Life on Earth--Global Change in the Biosphere
GS 121 Physical Geology
GS 122 Historical Geology
GS 203 Geology and the Environment
GS 212 Common Minerals and Rocks
GS 550 Geomorphology
GS 580 Field Work and Laboratory Work in Earth Science
GS 584 Principles of Oceanography for Science Teachers
GS 874 Seminar in the History of the Geological Sciences
GS 888 Colloquium in the Geological Sciences
