Bahamas Reef Environment Educational Foundation of Nassau, BAHAMAS.
B.R.E.E.F is the Bahamas Reef Environment Educational Foundation of Nassau, BAHAMAS. Founded in 1993, by Sir Nicholas Nuttall Chairman of the Foundation, it is dedicated to preserving reef ecosystems in the Bahamas through education of students and the public.
Projects are varied and include:
- Reef Art for Postage Stamps. A contest, open to Bahamian students, resulted in selection of 5 works of art, 4 of which will be used in postage stamps and the 5th will be on the First-day Cover. The products of this project will be available in 1996.
- Termination of Reef Destruction by Unsustainable Fishing. A contest, open to Bahamian students, that seeks creative ideas using essays, posters, slogans, art etc. to end unsustainable fishing practices. The number one problem now is the use of bleach to retrieve fish . This practice kills the corals and contaminates the system, resulting in ecological destruction of the reef. This is analogous to cutting down a tree to harvest the apples.
- In-Service Teacher Education for Primary and Secondary Education. Over a 4- year period beginning in 1997, BREEF will support Environmental Education workshops for one Bahamian teacher from each school. The BREEF workshops will provide a fundamental framework of understandings about the Earth and the role of humans in the Earth System. The workshops will focus on biological diversity, the role of reefs in island systems, nature and record of global environmental change, and Total Earth System Science as one model for learning of global interactions. The field-centered learning will be based on San Salvador at the Bahamian Field Station (BFS) which has excellent research and educational facilities and has long been a site for study of the Bahamian biogeosphere. Collaborating institutions include: the Bahamas Ministry of Education and Training and the College of the Bahamas, with collaborating scientists and educators from the Headlands Institute and The Ohio State University (Byrd Polar Research Center, Geological Sciences, and Mathematics, Science, and Technology Education).
