Limited 215-50 Mass Spectrometer
This 40Ar/39Ar
system consists of a highly sensitive mass spec and an on-line
vacuum line for gas extraction and Ar purification which is attached
to both a furnace and a laser chamber. This MAP machine is similar
to others of this manufacturer in general initial specifications.
It is non-standard in that it is equipped with a moveable Faraday collector
which enables simultaneous measurement of 40Ar
and 36Ar. The
vacuum lines are customized, made of commercially available components
plus custom fabricated components. The system is automated and operates
using a customized software which enables full operation from remote sites
via network connection. A low-blank furnace provides for incremental
heating and sample fusions. Laser sources provide for sampling by
spot melting, laser heating, or by sample ablation. All sources are
in routine use.
