Re: Response to request for assistance in writing tasks on the SX50
I received very informative notes from Arnold Bauslaugh (CF Minerals)
Fred Scott (Univ New South Wales) and Bruce Robinson (CSIRO), with many
tips and samples of tasks they're written. The material is lengthy. If you
wish a copy, send me a note and I will forward a compilation to you.

To: Probers with Coolwell Chillers
-- I have had on and off problems for months with my Coolwell Chiller and
only last week finally pinned down (I hope!) the problem: it does not
switch between cooling and 'heating' and gets stuck in the cooling
position,
so that the SX50 shuts down when the T hits the setpoint of 17oC.
-- The problem, I believe, is either a bad lot of switches and/or their
design which uses 2 rivets that apparently compress slightly the walls,
with
the result (with thermal expansion of metal inside working against you)
that the 'cooling' contact stays closed when it should open. Solution:
drill/grind off the rivets, replace with bolts; or replace the whole switch
yourself with an equivalent one
-- Did you know that you can read the water T in the local window?
enable by "tsts conf chec on", then "tsts chec" will give T and some
calculated heat load removed

MicroBeam Technique Issue of Canadian Mineralogist
'a mini-commercial' I think we can live with ;-)
From: "Robert F. Martin"
May I seize this opportunity to alert you to the latest thematic
issue of The Canadian Mineralogist, on Microbeam Techniques in the
Earth Sciences (volume 33, part 2, April 1995). The 308-page issue
covers all the microbeam analytical techniques that you are likely to
encounter. For the detailed contents of the issue, please consult our
home page: http://www.umanitoba.ca/geosci/canmin/canmin.html
The issue can be purchased for US$40 from the Mineralogical
Association of Canada Business Office, Cityview 78087, Nepean,
Ontario K2G 5W2, Canada, FAX+phone: (613)226-4651. The issue is one
of the six issues to be received by subscribers this year. In
other words, for $75, you can get all six issues that make up volume
33, which is still the bargain among society-run journals that Paul
Ribbe described a few years back! In case you are interested, the
next thematic issue (in early 1996) will be on the petrogenesis of
alkaline rocks.
