Hi Tom and John,

We have received some information on a list-server called Major-Domo. It
enables people to send things to an Internet user's group, to add
themselves to the list (or to ask the list-owner to allow them to join if it
is a "closed" list). It also enables an index of files to be requested, so
we could keep a set of files with information on various hardware aspects,
techniques, software etc. This would enable people to look up info about
the problem of the moment, and somehow to add info to what is there. There
can be commands from distant locations to the server if required.

Would you like us to go ahead with setting up an SX-User's Group list server
here, or would you like it to happen elsewhere. It does not matter much.
Greg Hitchen in our lab is becoming a networking guru, and has today
received a 2.1 Gigabyte disk for his Sun. This should defy all attempts by
SX users to fill up the disk. We should have the expertise to set up and
maintain a first try at the SX News Group or whatever. We will depend on
people like you to assist with design, suggestions for improvement etc.

There are other List-Servers available, but this one is reputedly simple and
relatively powerful. It has just been installed in a CSIRO laboratory in
Adelaide( but the "owner" is in Perth), so we can seek assistance when required.

What do you think?

Cheers,

Bruce Robinson
