In response to Bob Wintsch's question about ambhibole recalculation
programs, I thought users might like to know of these options:
I know of 3 PC-based programs for recalculation of mineral analyses.
Form1 (Mader, Russell,& Thirugnanam) comes from UBC and has been around
since 1988. It seems to work well and allows some flexibility in the
formatting of input ASCII files.
RECALC2 comes from Univ. of Western Australia. This program is refer
enced in Brendon, et al., American Mineralogist, V.76, 295-298.
A program specifically for Amphiboles called AMPHIBOL is available from
Linda Richard. See American Mineralogist, V.75, 421-423.
The descriptive introduction to the program is included below:
"AMPHIBOL is a program that recalculates chemical analyses of amphiboles
into their structural formulae, and classifies them according to current
IMA guidelines. The data can be entered using one of two different file
structures: with both ferric and ferrous iron, or with ferrous iron only
(e.g. microprobe data). The chemical analyses can be entered directly
from the keyboard, or imported from an ASCII format file to be saved in
an AMPHIBOL file. A printed output can be produced which contains five
recalculation schemes, and the appropriate nomenclature for each recal
culation. Also, the results can be presented graphically on the screen,
or printed on a dot matrix printer or a postscript laser printer.
Finally, the raw data and one selected recalculation scheme can be
exported to an ASCII format for processing using other software."
I hope this helps you out.
