Hi John-
Sorry to have taken so long to get back to you re ilmenite. We use a natural
sample of ilmenite (Binns Ilmenite) from Bohlen. It has significant MgO, minor
Al2O3 and minor MnO -- and inclusions. I find that it is somewhat
heterogeneous, so we have mounted up many crystals and analyze many spots
during standardization. Although it works pretty well, it probably is not the
ideal stoichiometric ilmenite that Ed is looking for. Don Lindsley does have
some synthetic ilmenites, but I think they are all very fine-grained, and would
require annealing in the piston-cylinder before being suitable for standards.
I'll let you know if I even do this -- I have spoken to him about it. Also,
you (or Ed) might want to talk to Don directly re his ilmenites.
