Subject: survey...finally
From: johnf@ice

Tom:

Here's the survey, finally; took a lot less time than I thought it would
take. How are the returns on it? (Did you mail/fax one to CF Minerals in
Canada?)

Andy Davis was here for a couple of days last month; he made a comment
to the effect that Cameca maybe should be at the AGU meeting this fall.

Any ideas or feed back about a users meeting at the fall AGU or GSA
meeting?

Western Hemisphere SX-50 User's Group

Initial Questionnaire

This questionnaire is being sent to all SX50 labs in our newly
formed
users group. We plan to compile some of the general information gathered
by
the questionnaire for distribution to all labs. We hope that some User
Group
activities will result from these efforts. For example, a meeting of SX50
users at one of the national meetings, training workshops (with the
participation of CAMECA), and development of new manuals. At the very
least,
by getting more organized we will all have better access to each others
expertise. Hopefully we will all benefit from this group.

2. Name for our User's Group
We need a good name for our group. Please make suggestions!
The New Age SX50 Group
3. Machine Configuration

Number of spectrometers and crystals: 5 spec (4 w/2; 1 w/4)

Do you have EDS; which manufacturer; level of software integration:
Yes; PGT; integrated, with Imagecraft
Type of computer:Sun Sparc IPX
Hard drive size:325 MB
Amount of ram memory: 32 MB

Which CAMECA software do you use (include version numbers):
Quantiview: 3.0
Older, text-based analytical programs:
Visiview: 3.6.1
Others:

What output devices do you have (color printer, Post Script
printer,
etc..): HP LaserJet 4M

Is your system connected to a network (if so, what kind): yes,
ethernet

What other options do you have: SX51 0.5 micron stage (for xray
mapping), framegrabber with 2 Sony monitors, anticontamination

4. Laboratory Personnel
Who are your official lab personnel and what are their capacities
(i.e., faculty, technician, etc...):
John Fournelle, Director of Lab
5. Lab Use
What is the approximate level of use (high, med., low., none) for
your
instrument in the following areas:

Routine geological materials: high

Trace elements in geological materials: low

Material sciences (ceramics, metallurgy, etc..): ultra high

Qualitative imaging: medium

Quantitative imaging: medium-high

Other applications:

Briefly describe the major types of analytical work that you use
your
SX50 for:

Geological: zonation of metamorphic and igneous minerals
(quant/map);

Engineering: line scaps of diffusion couples; quant of experimental
charges

6. Imaging
Briefly describe the types of imaging that you do and the software
that you use for image analysis:

BSE and X-ray maps: currently use FCIAP and CIAP with Visiview;
looking into exporting images to use NIH Image

7. User Manuals
Have you developed your own user manuals: yes

Are you interested in sharing user manuals with other labs: yes

8. Beam Stability
What do you consider "normal" filament life: a month

What is your normal filament warm-up procedure: not set procedure
yet; generally try to keep it at heat 150 when not in use

What kind of beam drift do you normally observe (for example,
during a
12 hour tbeam test): 0.5 - 0.8 % at 20 nA

9. Training
What training has CAMECA provided either during or after
installation
of your instrument: From engineers: During installation and 2
followup
visits -- initial introduction, plus more during subsequent
visits.
Also some maintanence instruction (e.g.window replacement). Also
during visits by Sam and Stefan. Very good and helpful. Also,
recently
~2-3 day visit by Andy Davis, with some training and
troubleshooting.

What type(s) of training would you be interested in participating
in
through the users group:
1) Image processing (and advanced acquisition)
2) Light element quantitataive analysis: stds, analytical setup

10. Users Group Meeting
What meeting(s) would you be likely to attend an SX-50 Users Group
gathering at:

Fall AGU BEST
Spring AGU Slight Chance
GSA Maybe-next best
MAS Slight Chance

What agenda items would you suggest for such a gathering:
1. Discussion of software: bugs, desired items; attempt to reach
consensus
2. Training: what is needed/desired; suggestions for setting up
training "schools", presumably at centrally located/desirous
locations (Honolulu!for winter school, Fairbanks for summer
school!)

11. Off-line Storage of Stage Points for Quantitative Analysis
Do you use an automated off-line process for point storage and
transfer? If so, what system and how do you like it:

NO, but we need one!

12. Carbon Coating
Can you recommend a good thickness monitor (other than the
traditional
visual method using polished brass):
NOPE

13. CAMECA Service
Please rank CAMECA service in the following categories on a scale
of 1
to 5 (1=poor, 5=excelent):

Response Time 4
Phone Support 5
Technical ability 5
Parts Availability 4
Overall 4.5

What specific recommendations for service improvements do you have:

14. Standards
Have you developed any standards that can be distributed to other
labs? In process: tephroite

Are there any standards that you need? (please list) a good TiO2
(~rutile) std

15. Users Group
Are there any requests or suggestions that you would like to make
to
the SX-50 Users Group?

Let's get together sometime this Fall - AGU or GSA.
