Tom:
I just got off the phone with Mike Dorais at Indiana, and based upon our
conversation, we should remove Basu's name from the letter. Mike made
clear that Basu is not the lab director, nor is he the main PI on the Probe
proposal, nor is he even an actual, hands-on user of the probe (apparently
he hires students to do his analyses).
Mike said he thought that the latest version of the letter was much
improved (he is now considering whether or not to add his name to it). He
said that as they have not had any problems with the Cameca service, he had
felt no justification in signing onto the original letter, and was upset
that Basu (who had no hands-on basis for saying anything about the probe
and its software etc) had effectively put his Lab's name on the letter. (He
felt that Basu had put his name on the letter only because a couple of
friends/
colleagues at other labs had done so.)
I hadn't imagined that we'd get involved in "politics" so soon in the
users group, but that's the way it is I guess.....
I think we should clarify who the signatories of the letter are: probe
lab directors and the main PI -- those people intimately involved and
knowledgeable about their SX50, and "in authority" of their labs.
When the letter is finally sent to Cameca (how is it going?), I will
notify Basu that his name was not on it, for the above reason.
Let me know if this is agreeable (and it would probably be good to cc a
copy to Mike Dorais).
