Hi John,
Congrats on your new SX and its installation.
I would imagine your SX being SUN driven, whereas ours is still
automated with a PDP-11. Altho the computer doesn't have much
power, it is quite adequate for automating the SX. We rely
instead on moving data off the PDP asap with ethernet, and doing
spreadsheet and image processing with macs and PCs.
We are very familiar with what you'd like to do with analyzing
the mode of rock thins like your sandstone. The mapping has been
taking up much time on the SX, and has produced justification for
a new stage automated JEOL/Link, which we are currently
installing. We will now be doing most of the mapping on that
instrument, but will still rely on after processing on PCs.
If I can help you with data conversion utilities let me know. We
regularly use a routine to read data from the .COR and .KEX files
to dreate a comma dilineated spreadsheet data file. Another
utility strips the headred from "ofpp stored" image files for
import into image editting software, e.g., photoshop.
Regarding the users' group, let me know how it progresses. It
also seems to me that Michigan or Mich. St. has set up a FTP
site, but I've somehow lost track of it. If you find a reference
to it pass it on.
Say HI to Ed Vicenzi for all of us here, and tell him it looks
like he's found something to keep him out of trouble. I didn't
see his internet tag on the cc list of this message. Do you have
an address for him?
