The department's Orton Geological Museum was constructed in 1893 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This museum was named after Edward F. B. Orton, who was Ohio State University's first president as well as the former president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and Geological Society of America. Orton Museum is one of the primary depositories of fossil and rock specimens in the Midwest and includes a public display museum. Strengths of the collections include conodonts, Pleistocene molluscs, echinoderms and arthropods.
