  • Joel Barker’s research focuses on understanding biogeochemical processes in alpine and polar ecosystems in response to physical and climate change. Current projects include 1) biogeochemical transformations of organic matter in glacier systems, 2) role of legacy carbon in contemporary biogeochemical cycling, 3) trends in black carbon emissions from India since 1460 A.D. Funding in support of Barker’s research program comes from the National Science Foundation, and the OSU Carbon, Water, and Climate Program. Barker was a Byrd Postdoctoral Fellow in 2006 and has established the Polar Biogeochemistry Laboratory at the Byrd Polar Research Center at OSU. Barker’s research has been published in peer reviewed journals such as Nature and Arctic, Antarctic, and Alpine Research, and has been featured on internationally on websites, newspapers and radio programs.
