This international workshop will offer an opportunity to gain
information about current and future geosciences research in
Antarctica, for researchers who have interest in undertaking new
studies of the continent and for geoscientists presently engaged in
Antarctic research.Workshop details are posted under "Forthcoming

available for grants-in-aid of travel or registration for U.S.

The permanent position of Program Manager for Antarctic Geology and Geophysics in the Antarctic Sciences Section of the Office of Polar Programs is
vacant. The manager will be responsible for the management and planning of the Antarctic Geology and Geophysics (AG&G) research programs working
with U.S. institutions and scientists, as well as those in other nations. Additional information can be found here

| Major Change to MRI Cost Sharing Rules |
| |
For this year's Major Research Instrumentation competition (proposal
deadline is 1/23/03), NSF has eliminated the cost sharing requirement for
non-Ph.D. granting institutions http://www.nsf.gov/od/oia/programs/mri/important.htm. For the past two
years, non-Ph.D. institutions have cost shared at 30% of total project
cost in excess of $100k for acquisition proposals.

| AAAS Women's International Science Collaboration (WISC) Program. |

Supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), this program aims to increase the participation of women in
international scientific research through travel awards to locations around the world. The awards are to foster new research
partnerships between U.S. scientists and colleagues in other countries.

| New Regulations for Protection of Antarctic Meteorites. |

New regulations for protection of Antarctic meteorites have been provided for under US law.
The new regulation, 45 CFR Part 674, will go into effect on 30 April 2003. The regulations can be seen
